Horticultural Society Spring Show
For the first time, we had to hold the Show on a Sunday to ensure a full complement of judges. There were plenty of entries (including several first timers) and lots of visitors.
The earlier date meant a splendid display of Daffodils, but only one tulip exhibit. The Cookery judge bravely sampled the gypsy tarts, a favourite of Kent School kitchens and pupils, and was happy to follow with the many delicious chutney entries, marmalade, Victoria sponges and cheeses scones. There were fewer large flower arrangements – competition from the Church, no doubt.
There were several entries for the Home for Wildlife, the winning entry re-using an old wine rack to hold various grasses, sticks and pine cones – but no wine bottles. In the Childrn’s classes, the Under 9s was won by Jamie Massey for his Easter tree and great picture of an ant. In the Under 6s, the whole of Owls Class from Cartwright and Kelsey made egg cress heads, using egg shells kindly supplied by Juliets. It was impossible to choose a winner and so the whole class was awarded the Sylvia Profitt Cup for best effort.
The winners of the other Cups:
Stanley George Boylett Cup for best daffodil exhibit Linda Ellis for five mixed stems
Jutson Cup for best floral art Gina Ayles for her display of Sunrise
Gerry Edwards Cup for best photograph, Janet Giles for Looking up at a Spitfire in the clouds
Tower Cup for best exhibit of flowers or vegetables Peter Ellis for his beautifully presented leeks
Cornelius Challenge Cup for the most points (except the Open Classes) Liz Rath with 35 points
Second was Julie Waller (18 points) and third Linda Ellis (17 points).
Ted Shephard Cup for the best first time entrant was awarded to Julie Waller.
We look forward to the Autumn Show on Saturday 20th September.
